How do I turn on two-step sign-in?
Updated 5 Oct 2026 · 3 min read
Two-step sign-in means a stolen password isn't enough to open your vault. After your password, ViamOne asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator or Authy. In ViamOne it's called Two-factor authentication, or 2FA.
You'll need an authenticator app installed on your phone and your ViamOne password.
Turn it on
- Click Settings in the left menu, then the Security & AI help tab.
- Under Two-factor authentication, click Enable 2FA.
- Enter your Current password and click Continue.
- Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code. If you can't scan it, type the setup key shown into the app instead.
- Type the 6-digit code from the app into the box and click Verify & activate.
- You'll see 2FA is now active. and a list of backup codes. Click Copy all codes and keep them somewhere safe, then click Done.
If you're doing this in your phone's browser, tap Add to authenticator app instead of scanning.
Turn it on
- Tap More, then Security.
- Under Two-factor authentication, tap Enable 2FA.
- Enter your Current password and tap Continue.
- Tap Add to authenticator app. Your authenticator app opens with ViamOne ready to save. Save it, then come back to ViamOne.
- Type the 6-digit code from the authenticator app and tap Verify & activate.
- You'll see 2FA is now active. and your backup codes. Tap Share codes to save them somewhere safe, then tap Done.
If your authenticator is on a different phone, scan the code under Or scan this from another phone, or type the key under Or type this setup key into the app.
Important: Backup codes are shown once only. Each one lets you sign in if you lose your phone, so keep them somewhere other than that phone.
ViamOne emails you whenever two-step sign-in is turned on or off, so you'll know if anyone else changes it.
Security: ViamOne never asks for your codes by email, phone or message. Type a code only on viamone.com or in the ViamOne app, and never share your backup codes.
Signing in from now on
After your email and password, you'll see Two-factor verification. Open your authenticator app and type the 6-digit code for ViamOne. It's checked as soon as you type the sixth digit.
Lost your phone? On the web, click Use a backup code instead and enter one of your backup codes. The phone app only accepts codes from the authenticator, so use the web for a backup code.
Required for owners and admins
Vault owners and admins may be asked to turn it on. If so, signing in takes you to the Security screen with the message Two-step verification is now required for vault owners and admins, and the rest of ViamOne opens once it's set up. New accounts get a few days before this applies.
Turn it off
Go to the same place, click or tap Disable 2FA, enter your Current password and confirm with Disable 2FA. Your vault is less protected without it.
Didn't work?
The code isn't accepted
Codes change every 30 seconds. Type the newest one. If codes keep failing, make sure your phone's date and time are set automatically.
It asks for a password, but I sign in with Google
You need a ViamOne password to set up two-step sign-in. Sign out, click Forgot password? on the sign-in page and set one. See I can't sign in. What do I do?.
Add to authenticator app does nothing
You'll see No authenticator app found if none is installed. Install Google Authenticator or another authenticator app and tap again, or type the setup key into it.
