How do I ask questions about my documents?
Updated 5 Oct 2026 · 3 min read
Instead of hunting for a paper, ask. "When does my passport expire?", "What's our car insurance policy number?" or "Who has no ID on file?" ViamOne answers from your documents and your family's profiles, and shows which documents it used so you can check.
Ask a question
- Sign in at viamone.com and click Ask ViamOne in the left menu.
- Make sure ViamOne is picked in the row at the top.
- Type your question in the box and press Enter, or click one of the suggested questions.
- Read the answer. To check it, open one of the documents shown with it.
Ask a question
- Open the ViamOne app and tap Ask.
- Make sure ViamOne is picked under the title.
- Type your question in the box and tap send, or tap a question under Try asking.
- Tap a document under the answer to open it.
You can speak instead of typing. While the box is empty, the button beside it is a microphone.
Ask about one document
- Open the document.
- Click Ask AI on the web, or tap Ask on the phone.
- Type your question.
Answers then come only from that document. To go back to the whole vault, click Whole vault on the web, or tap the × on the "Asking about" bar on the phone.
Get better answers
- Say who it's about: "Sarah's passport", "Dad's health insurance". "My" means you.
- Ask a follow-up in the same conversation. It keeps the thread.
- Rate an answer with the thumbs up or thumbs down under it. A thumbs down tells us to look at that one.
Questions that need judgement, like "Am I covered if I travel?", are answered by an advisor. See What do Advisors do?.
Your conversations
On the web, past questions are kept under Conversations, on the right or behind the Conversations button. You can pin one to keep it at the top, and New starts a fresh one.
On the phone, a conversation lasts while you're on Ask. Tap the pencil icon at the top to start a new one. Past conversations aren't kept on the phone.
Security: Ask only answers from your own vault. It never reads a file in a private folder, yours or anyone else's.
Didn't work?
It says it couldn't find the document
It may not have been read yet. See When will my document be read?. Or it may not be marked as belonging to that person. Open it and check who it belongs to: How do I edit a document's details?.
It says it doesn't see someone in my family
Check the spelling, or add them under People first. See How do I add family members and dependents?.
The answer is wrong
Open the document it used and check the detail. If ViamOne read a date or number wrongly, correct it on the document (How do I fix an expiry date ViamOne got wrong?), then tap thumbs down on the answer.
The Ask button on a document is greyed out
The document hasn't been read yet, or it's in a private folder. Private files are never read by AI.
