How do gift ideas work?

When a birthday, anniversary or new job comes up, ViamOne can suggest a few gifts. The ideas come from what your family has written about the person, and each one has a search link to stores in the country where they live. Nothing is bought in ViamOne, and no store pays to appear.
Open gift ideas
- On Home, find the celebration and click Write a wish (or Write congratulations for a new job). Or open Celebrations from the + menu and click the celebration.
- At the bottom of the window, click Gift ideas for and their name.
- On Home, or in Celebrations, tap the celebration.
- Tap Gifts.
A week or two before a birthday or anniversary, an idea like "Emma's 9th birthday in 9 days — a gift?" may also appear in Ideas on Home. Open it to see the gift ideas; on the phone, tap Gifts.
What you get
- Up to five ideas, each with a line saying why it suits them.
- A price guide for each: small, medium or a bigger one, in your family's currency.
- Store search links for their country. Tap one to search that store in your browser.
- Or a gift card, with links to gift cards from the same stores.
Where the ideas come from
ViamOne uses only what the family has told it:
- the occasion, and the age they're turning or the anniversary
- how they're related to you
- the note on the celebration
- what's written in the About box on their card in People
- lines in your notes that mention them by their first name
If ViamOne doesn't know where they live, it asks Where does and their name. Pick a country and it's saved to their card, so it won't ask again. The stores and prices follow that answer.
Tip: Add a line to their About box, like "loves cricket, vegetarian, collects fridge magnets", and the ideas get much more personal.
If there's nothing to go on, you'll see a few standby ideas and a note asking you to add something about what they like.
Security: What you write in someone's About box stays in your vault. It never goes on emergency links or in emails.
Turn gift prompts off
An owner or admin can turn off the gift prompts in Ideas: on the web under Settings › Ideas, on the phone under More › Ideas. Switch off Family under Show ideas about. You can still open gift ideas from any celebration.
Didn't work?
There's no Gifts button
Gift ideas are for birthdays, anniversaries and a new job. Awards, milestones and other good news don't have them.
The ideas feel generic
ViamOne has little to go on. Add a line about them in their About box in People, or write a note that mentions them, then open gift ideas again.
The stores or currency are wrong
The stores follow the country where they live. Make sure their address in People includes the country, then open gift ideas again.
It says that's a lot of gift lists
There's a limit on new lists in a short time. Wait a little and try again. Lists you've already opened come back straight away.
